Why choose a female plastic surgeon?

Some patients opt for a woman surgeon as they feel she can relate to them better and understand their concerns.

Do female surgeons have better outcomes?

Multiple studies have demonstrated that patients treated by female surgeons have better outcomes than those treated by male surgeons. In a cohort study of 1 million patients, those treated by female surgeons had lower risks of death, hospital readmission, and major medical complications at 90 days and 1 year following surgery. Another population-based matched cohort study showed that patients of female surgeons had a significantly lower mortality rate at 30 days. A similar population-based retrospective cohort study showed that patients treated by female surgeons had lower rates of adverse outcomes after surgery. A fourth study evaluated outcomes following 25 common surgical procedures and demonstrated that patients treated by women surgeons had lower levels of mortality, hospital readmission, and major complications at 90 days and 1 years after surgery. Another study performed in both the US and Canada showed that patients of female surgeons were less likely to be readmitted or experience major medical complications including death. Finally, a Canadian study of 1.2 million patients showed that patients treated by male surgeons had a 25% higher risk of death within one year following surgery.

Is it hard to be a female surgeon?

In a study I published in 2021, I found that the challenges cited most often by women plastic surgeons included work-life balance, childcare responsibilities, sexual harassment, and lack of gender parity at academic conferences.

How many plastic surgeons are female?

As of May 2024, there were 1411 female plastic surgeons in active practice in the United States, representing 18.3% of the number of board-certified plastic surgeons.

How low can the incision for the tummy tuck performed during a mommy makeover go?

During tummy tuck surgery, your incision may either be that of a mini tummy tuck, in which the incision is located in the same space as that of a c-section, or it can go longer, from hip to hip. The majority of patients do need that full incision in order to remove all of their skin.

How much does a mommy makeover cost?

The cost of a mommy makeover is going to vary significantly from surgeon to surgeon and city to city. However, keep in mind the cost will also depend upon which specific procedures you’re having done. For example, if you’re having a breast augmentation with implants and a tummy tuck, this will typically be more expensive than having a breast lift with liposuction. So please keep this in mind whenever you call around asking for an estimate.

How should I prepare for my mommy makeover?

To prepare for a mommy makeover, we recommend just maintaining your adequate nutrition and maintaining a stable weight. These are the best things that you can do. Prior to surgery, we want to make sure that you’re not smoking for at least four weeks before and four weeks after surgery. Avoid any aspirin containing medications for at least two weeks before and two weeks after surgery.

How soon after my mommy makeover can I begin using the silicone scar sheets?

When patients have mommy makeover surgery, I generally will have them use a silicone scar gel or sheets, beginning one to two weeks after surgery.
